Sydney is an iconic global city, boasting iconic landmarks and an amazing culinary scene, along with plenty of attractions for visitors of all kinds to see and do. Furthermore, Sydney serves as an intersection between urban life and nature – offering visitors plenty of places to see.
Brisbane fits more closely with the popular image of Australia: warm and sunny (although rain can fall at any time), with an easygoing lifestyle.

Daylight Savings Time
Daylight Savings Time, commonly referred to as DST, occurs each summer when clocks are set one hour ahead to make use of daylight earlier and reduce energy usage. It is used by certain Australian states and territories including New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and ACT whereas Western Australia, Northern Territory as well as Jervis Bay Territory and Norfolk Island do not observe DST.
Every year, the start and end dates for DST are announced by proclamations or declaration from either a State Governor or other minister – these decrees remain in force only during their year of issue.
DST is widely celebrated around the world as it increases sunlight during evening hours. But its implementation has its critics as well; some claim it contributes to higher rates of skin cancer due to more sun being out during midday hours.
Summer Time
Sydney and Brisbane share the same time zone for six months of each year; during the remaining six months however, clocks move an hour ahead as NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania implement Daylight Saving Time (DST). Queensland however does not implement DST and thus falls an hour behind NSW and Victoria during these times of the year.
Time zone shifts can present issues for travelers visiting family and friends across state boundaries, particularly those working in both states. Businesses dealing with interstate customers should also keep abreast of any such changes as their accounts may be recorded differently depending on where their customers reside.
Though most Australians enjoy longer evenings during summer, not everyone enjoys having one extra hour of sunlight on weekends – particularly regional Australians, particularly in remote locations where DST benefits may be offset by additional work involved in keeping track of daylight saving time (DST).
Winter Time
Winter in Sydney can be an ideal time to visit, with temperatures being lower and less humidity present. Outdoor activities such as coastal walks and whale watching cruises make for enjoyable outdoor pursuits; just remember to pack layers to stay warm during evening strolls.
Brisbane and most of Australia’s east coast observe Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEST), UTC+10. However, Lord Howe Island off the coast of NSW does not observe daylight saving time and is roughly an hour ahead of Sydney time.
Other Australian states do observe daylight savings during summer and all are one hour ahead of Sydney; Queensland however does not as its legislative bodies consider changing clocks twice annually to be too much hassle.
Time Zones
Time zones divide the globe into regions that use standard times for legal, commercial and social reasons. They generally follow national or administrative (such as provincial or state ) boundaries rather than strictly following longitude; it is more practical for areas sharing similar commercial or social ties to maintain consistent times across their regions.
Large countries might use multiple time zones, while smaller nations typically stick with just one time zone even when covering numerous degrees of longitude. Each time zone typically has an offset from Coordinated Universal Time that indicates how far behind or ahead it lies from this standard time reference point.
Australia is perhaps best-known as an example of dual time zones, featuring both Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), with UTC +10 hours observed across New South Wales, Victoria Tasmania and Australian Capital Territory; and Australian Central Daylight Time (ACDT), with UTC +9 1/2 hours, in South Australia and Broken Hill in East New South Wales.
