Air Canada flight attendants go on strike
Flight attendants at Air Canada went on strike Saturday, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The airline suspended operations after providing flight attendants a 72-hour strike notice after contract talks collapsed; their union, representing 10,000 flight attendants, has criticised Air Canada for failing to address key issues, such as wages and paid time off.
Passengers whose flights were cancelled can seek out alternate airlines to book another ticket with or request credit towards future travel, according to Air Canada. Flight attendants will collect them at major Canadian airports.
Canadian Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu recently announced she would use a clause in Canada’s labour code to intervene in an ongoing dispute between Air Canada and flight attendant union, UNIFARE, regarding air travel services and its respective union. She noted: “Canadians depend on air travel so it’s essential that these two parties resolve their differences quickly.” Previously, during a work stoppage last year, government authorities forced two largest railroads into binding arbitration with their labor unions for similar issues.
Tech billionaires take center stage
Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos all took prominent positions at Donald Trump’s inauguration, signaling their immense influence. Tech tycoons in the US have spent weeks since Trump’s election courting favor with him for their business interests – such as government contracts or regulatory leniency – through courting favor with him directly or through lobbyists representing their interests.
Meta, parent company of Facebook and Instagram, donated $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s inaugural fund while Amazon CEO Tilman Fertitta and Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi will both attend his inauguration. Zuckerberg and Musk have interacted personally with President-elect Trump as they aligned their companies’ policies with his worldview – such as ending US fact-checking restrictions and loosening hate speech restrictions on Facebook.
Trump’s vision of a multipolar future could force these billionaires to confront an unfamiliar reality – one in which their businesses may become less dependent on an intact global economy and USD dominance for survival. What impact will that have on their power and influence?
The 1906 Chicago Cubs have the best record in modern MLB history
The 1906-10 Chicago Cubs won four National League Pennants and two World Series Titles within five years, dominating their league through superb pitching, defense, and running play. They outscored opponents by 226 runs per season – an astounding achievement in modern MLB history.
Johnny Evers doubted whether or not the Cubs would capture their third consecutive pennant. Coming into September behind New York and Pittsburgh by a game, but through a series of miscues from manager Dick Selma such as an error that led to a fight between Giants Keith Moreland and Ed Lynch and another incident with manager Frankie Littlefield’s throwoff error caused a bench clearing fight allowing Ed Lynch to overcome Moreland to emerge victorious and claim victory for Chicago.
The Cubs achieved the best season in Major League Baseball history when they posted a 116-win season in 1925-1926, led by eight core position regulars and five pitchers who remained on their rosters all or most of five years – none had century+ careers but all 25 best positions players of that decade in one way or another were.
A 7-year-old girl is detained by ICE
Mitlalli NYC, a volunteer detention support network for families, reports that an 11-year-old schoolchild from Lower Manhattan was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement after checking in at 26 Federal Plaza in lower Manhattan. Both her brother, 19, and she herself were detained.
According to sources familiar with the case, they have been taken from P.S. 89Q: Jose Peralta School of Dreamers in Queens where the 7-year-old studied Spanish under a dual language program and sent to Texas detention facilities. Her mother will remain at Delaney Hall.
Families who are subject to final orders of removal must show up regularly at ICE offices, such as that near 26 Federal Plaza on Elk Street, to demonstrate they remain law-abiding citizens and do not violate any conditions on their deportation order. While children would previously join their parents at these appointments, now parents must arrange child care or custody arrangements for U.S.-citizen children themselves which can present serious difficulties.
